At Mantis, we believe your tennis racket strings deserve as much attention as your racket frame. After all, strings are the only part of your setup that make direct contact with the ball. They are the final link in your equipment chain — and arguably the most critical.

That's why whenever you purchase a racket from Mantis we give you the option to have the racket strung by our very own stringing expert, Tom, who strings all our rackets in our own warehouse using a top of the range stringing machine.

You have the option to choose our 'recommended' string set up which comes with a popular Mantis Polyester String strung at the recommended tension for that frame.

OR...

You can select our customised option where you decide the tension and you choose from the complete range of Mantis strings including 5 different polyesters, multi-filament and synthetic strings.

We offer this service at cost price because for us strings are so important we want to be confident that all our rackets arrive with our customers ready to play with a string set up that we trust and would happily use ourselves.

Whether you’re competing with a Mantis Pro Series frame or training with our PS Series rackets, choosing the right strings, tension, and pattern can completely reshape how you control the court.

Why Tennis Racket Strings Matter: The Mantis Philosophy

Think of your racket as an F1 car and the strings as your tyres — they dictate grip, feel, and responsiveness. Just as F1 teams obsess over compound and pressure, serious players fine-tune their string setup. We do the same at Mantis: our rackets are designed with string-bed response zones that work synergistically with the string to enhance performance traits like power, spin, or control.

Tour players, including those who string their Mantis Pro 310 frames every few sets, know the difference fresh strings make. That crisp pop? That predictable bite on a kick serve? That’s not just the racket — it’s the string setup doing its job.

The Fundamentals: String Tension, Thickness & Feel

  • Tighter strings = more control (but reduced power).

  • Looser strings = more power (but less directional accuracy).

  • Thinner gauge (17/18) = more feel and spin potential, but faster breakage.

  • Thicker gauge (15/16) = durability and tension retention, but less bite.

At Mantis, our tennis racket strings are a favourite among control-oriented players looking for consistent ball feel without sacrificing resilience.

Mantis Tip: Strings like our Mantis Comfort Synthetic absorb shock beautifully — ideal for players needing a more arm-friendly setup.

Why Strings Break (and Why That’s a Good Thing)

String breakage is natural — even necessary. It means your strings have performed their role and it's time to refresh.

  • Topspin-heavy strokes accelerate breakage by creating friction at string intersections.

  • Off-centre hits (especially near the frame) can shear strings regardless of age.

  • Clay courts introduce grit between strings, speeding up wear.

Mantis Insight: Our Mantis Tour Poly offers exceptional resistance to notching, making it ideal for frequent players or clay court regulars.

Restringing Frequency & Timing

A good rule: restring as many times per year as you play per week. So if you’re on court 3x/week, aim for 6-8 restringings per year.

Also consider:

  • If your strings feel “dead,” it’s time.

  • Long flights or extreme temps? Your tension may suffer.

  • Loss of control, comfort, or response? Re-evaluate immediately.

Mantis Racket Reminder: Check the inside of your Mantis racket frame — our recommended tension ranges (e.g., 50-60lbs) are printed for reference on all models.

Where to Restring Your Mantis Racket

  • Your local club or coach may offer restringing services.

  • Visit a Mantis Retail Partner for professional stringing, including free tension checks.

  • Or explore at-home options with a personal stringing machine — a great investment for competitive players and stringers-in-training.

Prefer convenience? Send your racket to our Mantis-certified online stringing service — with same-day turnaround and Mantis string upgrades available.

Natural vs Synthetic Strings

  • Natural Gut: Unmatched in elasticity and feel, but costly and sensitive to moisture. We recommend natural gut as a cross string in hybrid setups for max feel.

  • Synthetic Strings: Most players now opt for polyesters or multifilament strings — durable, cost-effective, and tailored to specific needs.

Our range includes:

  • Mantis Comfort Poly – softer poly for feel-focused players.

  • Mantis Power Synthetic – enhanced pop with all-round performance.

  • Mantis Tour Poly – maximum durability and spin control.

Extending String Life

While tennis racket strings will eventually wear out, you can slow the process:

  • Avoid leaving rackets in extreme temperatures (like car boots).

  • Use frame protection tape to prevent contact string breaks.

  • Add string savers for players prone to fast breakage.

Mantis Maintenance Tip: Always store your racket in a thermo-insulated racket bag to regulate tension stability.

String Patterns: Open vs Dense

  • Open string beds (16x18) = more spin and feel.

  • Dense patterns (18x20) = more consistent response and longevity.

All Mantis rackets are engineered with specific string-bed densities to match their performance identity — check your model’s tech sheet on our website for full details.

Tension & Gauge: Choosing Wisely

  • Tension range is typically 50–65 lbs, depending on your model.

  • Gauge options include: 15 (thickest), 15L, 16, 16L, 17 (thinnest).

  • Thinner = better playability, thicker = more durability.

Our Mantis tennis racket strings are available in multiple gauges to help you fine-tune your setup without compromise.

Mantis Facts & Stats

  • Rafa Nadal travels with six freshly strung rackets per match.

  • Mantis players on the ITF Tour often restring after every two matches.

  • The average racket requires 11-12.2m of string.

  • Our Tour Poly strings are tested to withstand over 10,000 ball impacts before losing performance.

  • Early tennis rackets? Strung with animal serosa, just like gut strings today.
